Censorship makes it hard for publishers to do their job, which is to make information available to the general public. Publishers choose which books they publish, which ideas they want to share and when censorship occurs those ideas are suppressed. Publishers are also affected by censorship in terms of finance. When a book is banned it is taken out of the school library collections, this means less exposure which results in less sales and income.

When an author's work is banned the book is taken off of school library shelves. The result is less opportunity for interaction with the book which means fewer kids will be asking their family to buy the book for them. Also, the ideas that the author wanted to share are no longer being shared or explored. Censorship is our way of asking authors not to be honest, to limit themselves and only explore and talk about what we are willing to allow them.

Readers are the most acutely affected by censorship and usually the least aware of it. When a piece of work is banned the ideas that were expressed are lost and readers do not get to think over or consider them. It’s also important for readers to see themselves reflected, whether positive or not. Sometimes it can help someone to read about another person experiencing a hard situation that they too are experiencing, it can take away that feeling that we are facing our battles alone. Although books are just text on paper, they connect to people in amazing ways.
