A series about oppression, slavery, manipulation, culture and revolution. Suzanne Collins has created a world of her own within the Hunger Games series, and yet her world is not so different from ours. The story setting is in the remains of North America where we live today, the Districts are similar to our States where they work together to support the government, Collins almost seems to addresses modern day slavery when writing about the natives of District 2. Where Suzanne differs from today is the culture that she has created. While our culture today still puts emphasis on ethnicity and skin color, in the Hunger Games series these features do not matter. The culture in the Hunger Games has no basis on skin color or race, the only ascribed status that matters is where you are born. Even wealth, which is considered to be an advantage in today's culture, is no help when it comes to the Games. No one in the districts is safe, everyone is a potential contender in the Games.
